Bathing suit...check! Towel... check! Child…check?
When your child first begins swim lessons you don’t think about what they will need. Keep reading to see what you should bring for your child’s swim lessons.
You’re thinking all they really need is a bathing suit and a towel to dry them off after. One thing you are forgetting is they are entering a chlorinated pool. With this being said the following items are needed to protect them and promote a positive swim experience.
Goggles.
We can’t stress this enough. There have been may students who show up without googles and do not want to put their face in the water because of this. Googles help to protect their eyes and also allow them to see where they are going when moving through the water.
Now you’re probably thinking let’s just grab some at the local store and call it a day. Spend a little extra money to purchase goggles that won’t break after one use. The last thing you want to do is keep buying the same thing over and over. Too many times we have seen students have them at the beginning of their lesson and then end up broken and never replaced.
Swim Cap.
A swim cap is optional. It all depends on their hair length. The rule of thumb is if the hair can cover their eyes when wet they should wear one. Check out our post on 3 Best Swim Cap Types to decide which one to buy.
Bathingsuit/Trunks.
This is pretty self-explanatory but, we’re going to mention it anyway. Make sure when looking for swim attire you find something that is durable and will not begin to fall off while they are swimming. The cutest one out of the bunch may not be the most functional.
Quick Note: Depending on age, you may also need water diapers.
Towel.
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to towels. Just make sure to have at least one in their swim bag so they won’t have to dry off underneath the hair/hand dryers or worse with paper towel. We’ve seen that too lol
Moisturizer.
It’s important to apply moisture back to their skin after a swim in harsh chemicals.
Do not read the remaining items if you don’t want to spend a little extra time at the pool after their lesson.
Shampoo and Conditioner.
These two are a must if you want to remove chlorine from their hair right away and not have to worry about it for the rest of the day. Doing this will prevent their hair from breakage.
Quick tip: If their hair was already clean before their lesson you will only need to apply conditioner to bring back moisture.
Body Wash.
Wash away dirt for clean, chlorine-free skin. Try to avoid cheap soaps that dry out their skin. This will only create more of a problem with the added dryness from the chlorine.
Comb and/or Brush.
Have this available to detangle their hair and allow them to look presentable when stepping back outside.
