We’ll sign them up for the classes and they should be fine after the last level. Stop right there! You’re interested in your child learning to swim, but you have already made one big mistake. That thinking is planning for failure, stress, and confusion.
This blog will set you up for success when planning how long your child should take swim lessons.
Begin with the end in mind. What is the goal you have for your child taking swimming lessons? Do you want them to just learn how to swim and be safe? Do you want them to swim as a recreational sport and stay social? Do you want them to become competitive and it “be their thing?”
Depending on what your answer is to any of the questions above will determine how much time is required and, of course, the amount of money needed.
Let’s break it down.
- If you only want your child to learn to swim for safety it can take a good 3 months of consistent training. The keyword is consistent. This should take them from learning how to blow bubbles to swimming a lap across the pool unassisted.
- Looking to take swimming a step further? Using swimming as a recreational sport will take 3 - 5 months. In this time they should be able to increase their endurance from the learn to swim stage and have a better skillset.
- This is an investment and you want them to take it as far as they can go! Aiming for competitive swimming can take 5 -12 months. Your child will become a more polished and groomed swimmer.
There are other factors that play a part in the time frames set above like, how old your child is, how well is your child picking up on the skills they are learning, how good are the instructors they are learning from, have they missed a lot of lessons, has there be a lot of time in between the last time they took lessons, how often are they taking lessons per week/month, and are they practicing outside of their lessons.
Hopefully, this blog post has given you more clarity on how long your child should take swim lessons.
